Scope and Contents of the Materials

c. 1933-1988.  A collection of 1,420 black and white prints, 1,900 negatives, 18 contact sheets, and assorted photographic and print materials. The majority of the photographs, negatives and slides document church architecture and religious art in Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Bolivia, El Salvador and United States. Also shown are colonial and domestic architecture, street scenes, antiquities, folk art, furniture, mountains, markets, archeological sites and indigenous peoples.

Collection Historical Note

Pal Keleman was a Hungarian historian who became a noted expert on Latin American art.  Many of the photographs were taken by Mrs. Kelemen on the couple's many trips to Latin America.  Others were gifts or purchases made by the Kelemens.
